Thanks guys for your thoughts on why the Sparrows machine was left hand drive. Sparrows had a mix of left and right hand drive cranes, but true all the big cranes were left hand drive.
I guess at the end of the day it is easier to pass other vehicles in the UK with the steering wheel on the right, but how many times was the Colossus going to achieve that, not very often !
Best regards
Graham

I have just put this on my photostream, ownership of the picture is totally unknown, so forgive me if I initially don't post the photo directly here at the moment. It is one more piece of the jigsaw in photographic evidence.

Hello, here is the picture of the R.G.stuart Colossus, I know it says Stanley Davies on the side, this was an altered image for publicity only.
This was only one half of the lift as it was a tandem lift with the other Coles Colossus in the UK belonging to J.D.White. It is believed that this was the only time in their history that these two machines were ever paired together.

I`ve seen this crane on a photo in Coles`s marketing brochure in 1977.
Photo was taken approximately from the position where the yellow Rover stands.

Hello. While I realise that this next picture is not the Colossus 6000, this was Coles first crane to take the name Colossus, for that reason only I think it is worthy of inclusion into this thread, sadly I have no information available at the moment for this amazing creation.

Hello Linaprin,
As you rightly say there were three versions of the Colossus, the 4000. 5000 and 6000 series. The original Coles Colossus came along way before this era, it was launched in 1954, with a lifting capacity of 41 tons and was built for a company called Tarslag in the UK, at the time of the launch it was the largest truck crane in the world.
Regards
Graham

Basically you are right....but if you expand "truck crane" a little bit and include "drawbar trailer crane" then the biggest crane of this art in the world was the Rosenkranz K501 from 1953. Lifting capacity 50 t @ 6 m radius.

It was designed and built by Rosenkranz, together with Demag, and mounted on a 3 axle Fruehauf tank transporter trailer type "M9". We had one picture of this crane here:

Hi Hendrik,
That is good enough for me, if the Rosenkranz had a 50 ton capacity a year earlier than the Coles Colossus, then it's a winner. Coles claimed that there's was the "largest mobile crane in the world", which I guess it wasen't. I will try and find the Coles Colossus advert.
Best regards
Graham

Hi Hendrik,
Just downloaded this into my photosrteam, Coles were only claiming this to be the biggest mobile crane in the world, I guess the Rosenkranz is a clear winner.
Best regards
Graham

Thanks for this scan, very interesting.

Clearly Coles can be named record holder of the largest crane with regard to series production. It would be interesting to know how many of these early Colossus have been produced....I can imagine the number was quite high?

In contrast Rosenkranz built only one single unit (K501), and this unit only for themselves. Rosenkranz was really a very unique company.

Cheers, Hendrik

Hi Hendrik, we may have a tie on our hands as far as numbers go, I do not know of any others, Tarslag had the first and probably the last,
I myself would love to find out how many were built. Crane development was quite rapid after this date and only six or so years later we had the Coles Centurian at 100 tons capacity. The Rosenkranz could still be the outright winner?.

I have a feeling the only way Coles can win this is the fact that the original Colossus for Tarslag became the basis for a crane that Tarslag built called the Kepple Trailer Crane, which as far as we can work out used the boom off the original Colossus,

This would make a bizarre run of two cranes. The Kepple Trailer Crane was a none slewing crane pulled by a Euclid dumper chassis. I think the rating for this was in the region of 65 tons or there abouts, sadly I have no information for this crane at the moment.
Best regards
Graham

Amazing to think than within six years JDW had an 800t crane and all the equipment to lift that amount. Often crane companies don`t buy all the equipment for the heaviest possible lifts.

I have no idear where this picture has come from with it's strange colour tint but it must be an official Coles picture in origin. it clearly shows that the 4th and 5th axles are fixed and non steering.
