When Statnett Transport A/S transported a transformer from the port of Trondheim to a power station in Klæbu two large tractors were needed. In the front was a gigantic Faun and back pushed a MAN 8x8.
The weight of the combination was 445,4 tonnes – by far the heaviest load driven on public road in Norway.
The transport was 70,3 meters long and 4,75 meters high. This meant that the route had been chosen with caution. The planning for the 20 km journey lasted 1 year. The route has been checked on foot and all critical places have been measured. Traffic lights were dismantled. On certain places the clearance was as small as one centimetre. Four police patrols as well as people from the “road-service” and the power-supply-company made sure everything went smooth.
The transformer came from ABB in Nyköping (Sweden) and went by boat to Trondheim (Norway). Here it was placed in the side-girder-frame, which is placed between the two axle-modules. It can be adjusted both horizontally and vertically, which means the load is always kept level. Everything is controlled by a driver placed on the first axle-module. Though Trondheim the possibility of lifting the load was useful, and when passing the E6 the load was lowered to the lowest position – and then the clearance could be measured in millimetres.
Both axle-modules have 12 axles – 96 wheels in total. Both modules can be steered by turning all but the two middle wheels. The module in the front is steered by the pulling tractor, and the rear module is steered by two drivers. Everything is coordinated via radio by the transport leader.
The working horse of Statnett is a Faun from 1977, and it has pulled heavier loads than the most. Retirement is around the corner. Ove Kullerud has driven the Faun mostly. “It has performed jobs all around the country, but it has not driven more than 70.000 km. Usually the tractor is transported by boat to the job. From Oslo to Trondheim and back it was driven on the road, which is fun”, Ove adds. He also tells that it is necessary to wear ear-protection because the Faun is very noisy. The Faun is quite a machine. It weighs 29 tonnes, it is 10 meters long, 2,75 meters wide and 3,65 meters high. With ballast it weighs 50 tonnes. It has 12 wheels on four axles and all axles are driven. Under the bonnet a 6-cylinder Cummins-diesel rules – it has 600 horsepower and 3.200 Nm. The axles are driven via a 6-speed Allison automatic transmission with converter. “We have experienced the road-surface being torn to pieces under the tires”, Ove Kullerud says.
The pushing tractor was a MAN 8x8 with 600 horsepower. On the steepest hills an additional tractor was needed – a 5-axle tractor with 450 horsepower. Then the combination measured 80 meters weighed about 460 tonnes and had 132 wheels. The three tractors had 1.700 horsepower in total.
When the combination arrived at Nideng power station the transformer was lowered onto rails on which it was rolled into the building. Another successful job done by the employees from Statnett.
