Hi

For one week I have had the pleasure of our new computer - HP Pavillion Media Center with Windows Vista. At first glance I'm actually quite pleased with Vista, but compared to our old computer (XP), there are some severe set-backs / problems - can anyone help?

1) Downloading from the Internet is extremely slow. I have a 5 M-bit connection and on the old one downloadning was in the passing lane with around 450 K-bit/sec. Right now I'm downloading a file from Rapidshare with 33 K-bit/sec. Surfing websites is also a pain in the ¤#%!#%#...!!

2) File-sharing using USB is also very slow - I have an external harddrive and the transfer-speed is around 20 MB/sec with USB 2.0!!??!!

Any ideas how to solve this?

3) I have connected my HP LaserJet1320 via USB. Windows finds the printer and reports, that the driver has been installed with success. But when I open the properies for the printers, no LaserJet is visible, and I cannot print anything...??

Any ideas how to solve this?

Regards

Do you use any kind of firewall oder on-demand virus scanner, in particular any different from the software on your old computer?
How's your hardware setup? (Connection between router/modem/whatever and your PC)

This might be a hardware issue of bad compatibility between the Computer and the drive. Any chance to borrow a fast USB drive or stick of a make other than your own for testing purposes?

I'm using ZoneAlarm and Avast - the same as on the new computer, but just the newest versions.
The connection is pretty straight forward: I have a splitter for the phone/dsl. DSL signal goes in the DSL-modem and from there a cable into the PC. Exactly the same deal as with the old computer. If I connect the old one, it runs smoothly, so the speed-brake must be on the new one.

I have tried with the external hard-drive (HP) and a non-HP memory stick. In the beginning the speed is ok, but then it drops to around 10 - 20 MB/sec.

I was thinking more of the type of the connection between modem and the PC.
USB or Ethernet (RJ45)?

So much for my plan blaming everything on USB.

Concerning the external drive and maybe the printer I'm currently suspecting a buggy USB driver. So getting a newer version (if available) of the driver might help.

On the internet issue, I'm a little lost right now...

I will try to update the USB driver (if available)

Thanks for the advice Sebastian. I will let you know, if it's successful.

generally, in the moment I would not recommend to migrate to Windows Vista. Its a nice GUI, indeed!

Some of my customers have problems to run "old" software (e.g. AutoCad 2006!!) on their new Vista machines.

New machines (esp. from Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens) are sold with the OS Vista installed. If possible, I try to downgrade them to Windows XP.

I know.

I would like to avoid switching back to XP, since I would like to use it as a Media Center - which I have heard are better in Vista, than in XP.

But two simple things as full-speed on the Internet and USB must be possible to get with Vista. I have no problems with getting my software running - just the two annoying problems.

&¤#"&/%¤&#¤"&%¤#"&¤#%/&"&//(/¤#¤"#¤!!!!!!!

When I insert a new CD-RW (700 MB) in the drive, Vista can only format it to 576 MB. But dammit - I NEED 700 MB!

Anyone have a clue???

And Hajo...stop preaching your XP - when the next paycheck arrives I will install XP as a second OS... No, Vista will be the second OS . I'm only keeping it because of the MediaCenter - must agree with Marco that it is quite good.
