Hi there!

First of all I want to apologise if I don´t open the thread in the correct section of the Forum.

I´m searching information about the equipment used in the late 60s and early 70s in Spain by TranSahara.

https://ibb.co/8BVkx7D

Thanks to a friend from France who was in possesion of al old Draize broucher I could figure out this was the builder of the modular trailer.

I came here in the hope that someone could help me find more photos of this trailers.

Information about the trucks is also welcome even though now I know they´re built with specifications for work in the dessert even though they´re never sent there, at least before this huge transport. Maybe Kenworth 553 model.

I share here a video of the transport made in 1968 that could be of interest for some of you:

Thanks in advance!

drh,

Here below a few additional pictures of the "Garona" transport managed in Northern Spain in 1968 by Transahara with their Kenworths and 2x12-line Draize modular trailers:

All items were later bought by Stoof Breda: a drawing of the 12-line Draize unit was available in one of their old 1960s brochure. Here below a similar unit being tested by the Swiss manufacturer:

I hope this helps.
Guy

Hi Guy,

Thank you very much for sharing that photos, specially the last one that I didnt know it.

As you´ve mention and I could find out thanks to the info contributions of friends all that stuff ended up in The Netherlands and the trucks were later sold to Dubai as registrer them in NL was not possible.

In this link we can see some photos of the transport from the archive of the manufacturer of the vessel:

https://www.rdm-archief.nl/RDM-MF/RDM-MF-1968B.html

Here a Spanish blog with some nice photos:

https://imatgessobrerodes.blogspot.com/2015/05/transsahara.html

Thanks to the info that they were sold to Stoof I could find this picture of one of the KW painted in their colours:

Unfortunally i was not able to find more, I think they were in NL for a very short time.

I´ve bought the book ¨Transportes Especiales Logística al límite de lo imposible¨ about the history of TranSahara and Sainert and I hope to find more information there.

Greetings

drh,

Some pages of the 1970s Stoof Breda Handbook I mentioned earlier:

As you have noted, this modular trailer is different from the Transahara one as it has dual tires all round (8 per line, instead of 4 tires only for the Transahara one). It looks more like the following one, except for the spacing between sets of 4 lines, similar to the Spanish unit:

Attention the Forum Admin.: sorry for the too large picture posted yesterday above, I noted that it was too large only after posting it.

Regards.

drh,

I have found some other pictures of the Transahara move in Spain which contradict my statement above: the Spanish modular trailers have 8 tires/line (and not 4, as I indicated earlier), so they are just like the trailer in test shown above:

Hi GuyM,

Thank you very much for the photos.

These trailers seem to be very advanced for their time!

Anyone knows what happened to Draize? Was it bought by other company or closed?

As soon as I read the book and get some more information I´ll post it here

Greetings

drh,

There is few info about Draize.
I know that they were located in Neuchatel (Switzerland) and were producing all sorts of trailers, such as rail equipment carriers, low bed units, modular trailers or girders trailer, etc. They sold quite well in the sixties to The Swiss Army and local heavy hauliers (Welti Furrer was one of these) and also to export (Stoof Breda and Transahara, just to name two of these).
They seem to have stopped producing such items in the 70s and have simply disappeared from that market.

I have attached a few additional Stoof Breda pictures below, showing Draize modular units, either in 4-tire/line form or more "conventional" with 8-tire/line:

I hope it helps.

Here below, a few additional Draize trailers:

The top ones were used in Switzerland to move transformers and cable cars cable drums between girders in local mountainous roads. Bottom ones were used to approach rail equipment to end-users.
